奧斯卡最佳影片獎歷屆沿革
第一屆奧斯卡時（1927-1928年，於1929年頒發），“最佳影片獎”頒發了兩座，一座最佳作品獎（Best Production）頒給了史詩片《鐵翼雄風》，另一座傑出藝術作品獎（Unique and Artistic Production）則頒給了藝術片《日出》。事實上，評審和片廠老闆們卻以他們的影響力來改變了影片的獲獎。米高梅老闆Louis B. Mayer就因不喜歡自己公司的金·維多所拍的《羣眾》的寫實手法，而無奈地將獎項頒給了《日出》。隔年，奧斯卡又改回單一的“最佳作品獎”，並決定《鐵翼雄風》是這個獎項之得獎影片，而使得《鐵翼雄風》總被誤作是頭一年度的最佳影片。
經過多年的發展，1944年起，奧斯卡將最佳影片獎的提名數，限制在五部。但從第八十二屆（2010年）起則增加為10部，以及第八十三屆（2011年）是10部，從第八十四屆（2012年）開始奧斯卡最佳電影提名數又減少為9部。
有人認為，非英語系的電影只會入圍最佳外語片，也就是説，只有相當少數的非英語電影，能夠因為其藝術價值，而獲入圍最佳外語片以外的其他獎項。因此，奧斯卡最佳影片獎幾乎可稱作是“奧斯卡最佳‘英語’片獎”。時至2022年止，僅有十一部非英語電影獲得最佳影片獎的提名，分別是1937年的《大幻影(La grande illusion)》（法語）（1939年第11屆）、1969年的《焦點新聞(Z)》（法語）（1970年第42屆）、1971年的《大移民(Utvandrarna)》（瑞典語）（1973年第45屆）、1973年的《呼喊與細語(Viskningar och rop)》（瑞典語）（1974年第46屆）、1994年的《郵差(Il postino)》（意大利語）（1996年第68屆）、1997年的《美麗人生(La vita è bella)》（意大利語）（1999年第71屆）、2000年的《卧虎藏龍》（漢語普通話）（2001年第73屆）、2006年的《硫磺島的來信(硫磺島からの手紙)》（日語）（2007年第79屆）、2011年的《藝術家(The Artist)》（默片）（2012年第84屆）、2012年的《愛(Amour)》（法語）（2013年第85屆）、2021年的《駕駛我的車（ドライブ・マイ・カー）》（日語）（2022年第94屆）

奧斯卡最佳影片獎獎項改革
2020年9月8日，奧斯卡主辦方美國電影藝術與科學學院，宣佈了針對推動多元化的重大改革措施：從今後幾年開始，所有影片要獲得競爭奧斯卡最大獎項“最佳影片”的資格，必須滿足以下4項要求中的至少兩項。此措施從2022年和2023年奧斯卡開始實施，2024年開始全面生效。
1、演員和電影主題、敍事方面（滿足以下各要求的至少一條，可算為滿足此項）
- 主角或重要配角至少有一人是未獲得充分代表的種族：亞裔、西裔/拉丁裔、黑人/非裔美國人、土著/美國原住民/阿拉斯加原住民、中東/北非、夏威夷原住民或別的太平洋島民、別的未被充分代表的種族。
- 至少30%的次重要演員和更小的角色來自以下至少兩種未獲得充分代表的羣體：女性、未獲得充分代表的種族、LGBTQ+羣體、有感知或身體缺陷或耳聾、聽力弱的人。
- 主要的故事線、主題或敍事的核心是一個未獲得充分代表的羣體：女性、未獲得充分代表的種族、LGBTQ+羣體、有感知或身體缺陷或耳聾、聽力弱的人。
2、創意領導和項目團隊（滿足以下各要求的至少一條，可算為滿足此項）
- 這些創意領導職位和項目主管——選角導演、攝影師、配樂師、服裝設計、導演、剪輯、髮型師、化妝師、製片人、藝術指導、佈景師、音效師、特效總監、編劇——其中有至少兩人是來自未經充分代表的羣體：女性、未獲得充分代表的種族、LGBTQ+羣體、有感知或身體缺陷或耳聾、聽力弱的人——其中有至少一人是來自以下未獲得充分代表的種族：亞裔、西裔/拉丁裔、黑人/非裔美國人、土著/美國原住民/阿拉斯加原住民、中東/北非、夏威夷原住民或別的太平洋島民、別的未被充分代表的種族。
- 別的重要位置上，劇組工作人員/團隊和技術位置(不包括製作助理)至少有6人是來自未獲得充分代表的種族。這些位置包括但不限於第一副導演、場記、燈光師等。
- 總的劇組人員構成中，至少有30%是以下未獲得充分代表的羣體：女性、未獲得充分代表的種族、LGBTQ+羣體、有感知或身體缺陷或耳聾、聽力弱的人。
3、行業准入和機遇（滿足以下全部兩條要求，可算為滿足此項）
- 有償學徒和實習機會方面，該電影的發行或注資公司有來自以下未獲得充分代表的的羣體的帶薪學徒或實習生，並滿足以下要求：女性、未獲得充分代表的種族、LGBTQ+羣體、有感知或身體缺陷或耳聾、聽力弱的人；大的主流電影公司/發行公司在大多數以下部門開設有實質性的、持續進行的帶薪學徒和實習崗位，包含未獲得充分代表的羣體(必須包含未獲得充分代表的種族)：製作/開發、實際製作、後期製作、音樂、視覺效果、採購、商務、發行、營銷和宣傳；小的主流電影公司/發行公司或獨立電影公司/發行公司至少有兩個以下部門開設有實質性的、持續進行的帶薪學徒和實習崗位(至少有一項包含未獲得充分代表的種族)：製作/開發、實際製作、後期製作、音樂、視覺效果、採購、商務、發行、營銷和宣傳。
- 訓練機會和技術發展(劇組人員)方面，影片的製作、發行和/或注資公司在線下職業技術發展方面提供了培訓和/或工作機會，對象是以下未獲得充分代表的羣體：女性、未獲得充分代表的種族、LGBTQ+羣體、有感知或身體缺陷或耳聾、聽力弱的人。
