芝加哥位於美國中部、世界第一大湖密歇根湖畔與芝加哥湖交匯處，面積588平方公里，現有人口270萬。芝加哥是美國的鐵路樞紐，幾十條鐵路交匯於此，連接美國各大城市；奧黑爾國際機場是世界上最繁忙的國際機場之一；19世紀開通的伊利諾伊-密歇根運河，把處於內陸的芝加哥同五大湖和大西洋連接起來，變為港口城市；因此，芝加哥可以稱得上是美國水、陸、空交通運輸的中心。美國最大的期貨市場-芝加哥商品交易所和芝加哥期貨交易所均設在此。
