辛出生於俄亥俄州代頓的Ramón Antonio Gerard Estevez，父母分別是是愛爾蘭移民Mary Ann（來自蒂珀雷裏縣的Borrisokane）和西班牙出生的工廠工人和機械檢查員Francisco Estevez（來自加利西亞的Parderrubias）。 [5] 
高中畢業後，他故意在戴頓大學的入學考試中不及格，前往紐約追求表演事業。最初在外百老匯演出，靠打工度日。
1964年在百老匯演出《玫瑰怨》引起各方注意，並請去出演被米高梅搬上銀幕的《玫瑰怨》（The Subject Was Roses，1968）中兒子的角色。1973年因主演《窮山惡水》（Badlands，1976）而獲得了聖塞瓦蒂安國際電影節最佳男主角獎。1979年他在越戰名片《現代啓示錄》（Apocalypse Now，1979）中也表現極為搶眼。
