only可作副詞和形容詞，意思是僅；只，其主要用法有如下幾點：

1.在一般情況下，only通常放在它所修飾的成分之前。例如：

She saw only seven men.她看到的只有七個人。

We learned it only yesterday.我們昨天才知道這件事。

2. only修飾謂語時，通常放在動詞之前。如果有be動詞、助動詞或情態動詞，則放在這類詞之後。例如：

He's only a worker.他只是個工人。

I've only read the book once.此書我只看過一次。

3. only修飾狀語時，通常放在句子末尾。但有時為了加強狀語的語氣，也可將only及其後面的狀語提前放在句首。這時，句子要用部分倒裝語序，即將be動詞、助動詞或情態動詞放在主語之前。例如：

譯：只是到了那時我們之間才有了更好的瞭解。

誤：Only then we got to know each other better.

正：Only then did we get to know each other better.

正：We got to know each other better only then.

如果是複合句，只倒裝主句部分，從句部分不倒裝。例如：

Only after new China was founded was he able to go to school.

只是在新中國成立後，他才能上學。

4. only doing sth.與only to do sth.都可作結果狀語，區別是：only to do sth.表示主語難以預想的結果或結果出乎主語的意料之外；only doing sth.表示謂語動詞的動作造成的結果。例如：

The sap passes right through their bodies, only getting a little thicker and sweeter.

液汁徑直流過它們的體內,結果變得更濃、更甜。

史密斯急忙趕回家,結果卻發現門鎖着。

我勤苦工作,結果卻是失敗。

5. only修飾定語從句的先行詞時,定語從句的引導詞通常用that,而不用which、only修飾;one of/among+複數名詞;這一結構時，定語從句的謂語動詞用單數。例如：

He is the only one of the students who has read the book.

他是那些學生中惟一看過這本書的人。(不用have)
