1996年在中國科學院水生生物研究所被聘為研究員、博士生導師；1999年至2007年曾任中國科學院水生生物研究所副所長，所學術委員會副主任；2002年至2005年是第九、十屆國家自然科學基金委員會生命科學部專家評審組成員；2005年獲國家科技進步二等獎（排名第四）。

1996年在中國科學院水生生物研究所被獲政府特殊津貼，是國家傑出青年科學基金獲得者，湖北省有突出貢獻的中青年專家，新世紀國家百千萬人才工程國家級人選。

現為中國科學院水生生物研究所副所長，淡水生態與生物技術國家重點實驗室主任、中國水產學會魚病學專業委員會主任委員、中國動物學會寄生蟲學專業委員會理事。《水生生物學報》、《水產學報》、《中國水產科學》、《長江流域資源與環境》、《Current Zoology（動物學報）》、《Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology》、《Parasites & Vectors》等刊物的編委。 ^[2]

主持國家重點基礎研究發展計劃（973計劃）項目、中國科學院知識創新工程重要方向性項目、國家自然科學基金委員會重點項目和麪上項目等研究任務。承擔國家自然科學基金委員會重點項目和重點國際合作項目，以及中國科學院戰略性先導科技專項子課題的研究任務。研究方向包括魚類的免疫系統和免疫反應，魚類細菌病的致病機理以及免疫防治，寄生蟲種羣生態和宿主-寄生蟲的相互作用。研究工作主要集中在魚類的模式識別受體、魚類和低等脊椎動物的干擾素系統、柱狀黃桿菌和愛德華氏菌的致病機理與免疫防治；同時致力於探討我國日本血吸蟲和其中間宿主的遺傳多樣性、以及魚類寄生蟲的系統發育等方面的研究。已發表研究論文150餘篇，其中SCI收錄論文100餘篇，他引超過2500次；培養博士學位研究生26名，碩士學位研究生6名。 ^[1]
