2002年1月29日、2月5日和23日，時年22歲的清華大學機電系學生劉海洋在北京動物園先後用硫酸潑傷了5只熊。事件曝光後，在社會上引起極大反響。據瞭解，2002年1-2月間，劉海洋先後兩次在北京動物園熊山黑熊、棕熊展區，分別將事先準備的氫氧化鈉（俗稱“火鹼”）溶液、硫酸溶液，向上述展區內的黑熊和棕熊進行投餵、傾倒，致使3只黑熊、2只棕熊（均屬國家二級保護動物）受到不同程度的損傷。 ^[2-3] 

出事後劉海洋被北京西城警方羈押，據他自述這麼做的原因是：“考證黑熊嗅覺是否靈敏。”

因此事件，劉海洋被清華大學處以留校察看的處分。

2003年5月1日，據中國新聞網報道，西城區人民法院對清華大學學生劉海洋就“硫酸潑熊案”作出一審判決。法院認定劉海洋的行為已經構成故意毀壞公私財物罪，但考慮到他能夠真誠悔罪，且其在故意毀壞財物犯罪中，情節輕微，故免予刑事處罰。
