對植物病原真菌系統學研究中的一些基礎性問題提出新的學術思想，採用多相分類學的理論和方法，表型與基因型結合，建立部分類羣科學的物種概念和趨於自然的分類系統，重點研究了植物病原真菌中一些複合種的遺傳及生理病理特徵分化。此外，還澄清了糞殼菌目一些重要屬的系統演化關係，修訂了部分類羣的分類系統。對我國的淡水真菌進行了較系統的資源調查和分類學研究，並研究了其多樣性和分佈與環境因子的相互關係。鑑定真菌標本5000多份，分離保存菌株2500多株，發表新屬5個，新種40個，新組合7個。在14種國際雜誌上發表論文50篇（其中SCI論文44篇），發表英文專著一部，參編專著2部。任國際雜誌Mycology 執行副主編，Fungal Diversity 編委，為Plant Pathology等9種國際雜誌審閲稿件。獲國家科技進步二等獎，雲南省科技進步一等獎各一項。
