東低地德語

東低地德語是大陸西日耳曼語的方言連續體的一部分。

在東低地德語區的西部，東低地德語逐漸地變為西低地德語。兩者一般以動詞的複數結尾的不同來區分：東低地德語基於古第一/三人稱結尾 -e(n)，而西低地德語則基於古第二人稱結尾 -e(t)。

在東低地德語區的南部，東低地德語逐漸地變為East Central German。兩者的區別在於ECG受High German consonant shift的影響，而東低地德語則沒有。受HGCS影響的區域仍在擴大，特別是 Berlinerisch dialect（一種島方言）正在受圍繞着它的Brandenburgisch dialect的影響。

It also includes Plautdietsch（originating from Danzig）, which is spoken by Mennonites in North America and a few other places in the world. Berlinerisch（in Berlin）was a version of Brandenburgisch in medieval times until they split off; it is now seen as an East High German dialect. Baltendeutsch is a High German variety influenced by East Low German formerly spoken by Germans in the Baltic states.

德語分為高地德語（Hochdeutsch）和低地德語（Plattdeutsch）。高地德語是共同語，它採用了低地德語的某些發音規則，低地德語聽上去更象英語和荷蘭語。通用的書面語以高地德語為準。各方言之間的差異很大。高地德語和低地德語的語言分界線大致從德國西北部的亞琛起，向東經過萊茵河畔的本拉特、卡塞爾、馬格德堡直到奧得河畔的浮斯騰堡，這條線以南是高地德語，以北是低地德語。

高地德語（Hochdeutsch）是西日耳曼語(Westgermanisch)，主要通用於德國、奧地利、列支敦士登、瑞士和盧森堡，也用於一些臨近的地區，是現代德語的主體。高地指阿爾卑斯山(Alpen)和臨近的德國南部山區， 在瑞士和盧森堡，“高地德語”一詞特指標準德語。

低地德語(Niederdeutsch)通常分為三大體系：

東低地德語(Ostniederdeutsch)，包括柏林(Berlin)、梅倫堡(Mecklenburg)等地區所使用的東、西普魯士德語(Ost- und Westpreussisch)都是東低地德語的一種。
