主要從事多尺度接觸界面與表面的力學行為（如接觸、粘着、浸潤、摩擦、磨損、潤滑等）的研究。

近年來主要針對接觸界面的力學行為，發展微納米尺度表徵方法，探究固體材料在小尺度上表面力學行為和機理，揭示宏觀尺度接觸力學模型的微觀機制。在《Nature》、《Science》、《PNAS》、《Physical Review Letters》、《JMPS》等國際期刊上以第一作者（及並列第一作者）、通訊作者發表多篇論文。論文成果先後被美國國家自然科學基金委、中國自然科學基金委員會、美國材料學會、美國陶瓷學會、美國摩擦及潤滑工程師學會、英國皇家化學協會、中國科協以及ScienceDaily、MIT News、PhysOrg、ChinaDaily、科學網、搜狐網、網易、新浪、清華大學主頁等國內、外媒體所報道。
