主要基於花粉和炭屑等生物指標記錄，開展植被、氣候環境、人類活動和過去全球變化研究。重建黃土高原末次盛冰期和全新世温暖期植被格局，全面認識黃土高原自然植被分佈特徵、演替過程，為應對未來氣候環境變化以及黃土高原生態環境建設提供科學數據。開展不同時間尺度東亞季風區和內陸乾旱區氣候環境變遷及氣候事件研究，在晚新生代東亞季風變遷，末次冰消期以來氣候事件和變率等研究中取得新見解；較早開展天然火與人類火活動研究，探討火活動與植被和氣候的關係。系統開展人類活動的自然指標記錄，研究早期農業起源、擴散與傳播，重建我國北方地區尤其是黃土高原農業活動方式與強度，探討主要農作物傳播的時間與路徑，揭示早期農業活動對植被和生態環境的影響，為人類活動與環境變化關係研究提供新途徑和新思路。
