typhoon，英文單詞，主要用作為名詞，作為名詞時譯為“颱風”。
typhoon單詞來源
typhoon在英語中指在西北太平洋和印度洋的暴風。若隨其來源，部分語言中有很少的語言能跟typhoon一樣表明意思。在當時希臘語的typhon一詞中，在古希臘意味着當地風神的名字，也表示“旋風”這個意思。後來這一詞傳入到阿拉伯地區，接着以這種形式，被傳入到印度人使用的語言，當時11世紀的穆斯林入侵者在印度定居。因此在阿拉伯語中的單詞的衍生，從印度語中的這個單詞傳入到了英語。後來在中國，人們給熱帶風暴一個新的名詞——颱風，這起源於中國廣東省粵語的讀音toi fung與阿拉伯語的借用詞相似，一開始是tuffoon這一詞在1699年列入英語一詞，最後通過各語言的不同形式合成了typhoon一詞。
