《When I’m Gone》創作於2003年，在2005年的精選集中發行，這張專輯被認為是埃米納姆告別樂壇的開始，他在當時説：“我正處於我人生中的一個艱難時期，我不知道我的事業將何去何從......這就是我將這張專輯稱之為‘謝幕(Curtain Call)’的原因，因為這很可能是我（職業生涯）的最終章，沒人知道這會不會成真。”

這首歌的歌詞主要表達了Eminem的名人身份很大的影響到了自己的生活與家庭，他用意象喚起了他對家庭分崩離析的悲傷之情。

歌曲MV由安東尼·曼德勒擔任主導演。

MV開頭，埃米納姆身處一個小型集會，在講台上講話，引出歌曲。歌曲開始是，畫面轉到他的回憶：他在房間裏，畫面在這兩個場景中轉換。他忙於創作，忽視了女兒海莉，當她看着女兒離去時，才感到懊悔。隨着副歌，埃米納姆出現在全黑的背景中，唱着副歌，並做出祈禱的手勢，另一個畫面中，海莉正在前院孤獨地盪鞦韆，畫面在兩個場景中切換。副歌之後，鏡頭出現在房間裏，海莉正在用箱子堵住門口，讓埃米納姆不要離開，最後她把一串有她相片的項鍊給了埃米納姆。隨後畫面轉到一個酒店房間，埃米納姆對着鏡子説唱。他走出房間，外面變成了一個舞台。他身穿西服，對着觀眾在舞台上演唱副歌。第三段開始，埃米納姆結束了表演，他向觀眾鞠躬，觀眾將一束束玫瑰花扔在舞台上。他向觀眾席上看，驚訝的看到了他的女兒海莉，海莉請求他救她的母親，埃米納姆的妻子金姆，並離開了。接着，幕布收了起來，他面向一面鏡子，看到了他的女兒和妻子，又看到了自己，他揮拳砸碎鏡子，MV之前的一幕幕閃回。畫面轉到了埃米納姆的家，他走向自己的妻子與兩個女兒與她們玩耍。畫面再次轉到黑色背景，埃米納姆唱着副歌。最後畫面轉回集會，埃米納姆站在講台上，掌聲響起。

《When I'm Gone》作為當時埃米納姆的“告別曲”，無疑是他所有歌曲裏面十分感性的一首，無論副歌還是主歌都流露出令人悲傷的情感。這首歌如同《Mockingbird》一樣，是一封寫給自己女兒的“情書” ^[4]  。埃米納姆在這首歌中把自己生活的現實情況與自己誇大的想象結合，構造出一個情節令人感動的故事。

《When I'm Gone》這首歌講述的故事，埃米納姆不是娓娓道來，而是用貫穿整首歌的強有力的聲音去訴説，讓整首歌多了一份憤怒又自責的情感色彩。伴奏運用了小提琴，連貫而悲傷，但有些一成不變，使得這首歌整體感覺有些單調 ^[5-6]  。
