在失敗的Hot Space專輯之後，Queen 樂隊重現調整了音樂的方向，去掉了做作的迪斯科風格。 Queen 的80年代最佳專輯 The Works在團員屢起勃溪之下，於1984年出版。也許是風雨不斷的緣故，本作有着缺乏已久的整體張力和深度。John Deacon的 I Want to Break Free似乎反映了團員們的心境；Freddie Mercury的 Keep Passing the Open Windows（標題出自 John Irving 的小説）和 It's a Hard Life（開頭借用 Leoncavallo 的歌劇「丑角」）則在活力四射中充滿內省。Roger Taylor打頭陣的單曲Radio Ga Ga靈感得自MTV，曲中説：「你輝煌過，曾經擁有力量，而你的巔峯尚未來到 (You had your time, you had the power, you've yet to have your finest hour)。」表面上當然是以收音機和MTV對比，但未嘗不可看作對身處新浪潮時代的自我期許。
