Nearer My God To Thee

本詩首於1840年秋在英國芬斯堡一教堂唱出。由於本詩因未提及基督，一時曾受嚴厲的批評，直到1856年藉着梅森配曲的雙翼，將其送進全球聖徒的心裏。不僅這首詩歌是從上面來的，就是它的音樂也是主所賜的。

《Nearer My God To Thee 更近我主》這首詩歌舉世著名，幾乎是家喻户曉，無人不知，廣受世界各地聖徒的喜愛。作者撒拉亞當斯（Sarah F. Adams），1805年2月22日生於英國艾色克斯郡哈勞（Harlow,Essex），為傅拉瓦（Benjamin Flower）的第二小姐。父親傅拉瓦是一位剛毅卓越的新聞記者，年輕時因如實報導了法國大革命的情況，於1799年被捕入獄。許多同情者經常探獄，其中有一位學校的老師郭德小姐（Miss Eliza Gould），兩人日久生情，等他出獄後便舉行了婚禮。

撒拉和一位工程師亞當斯威廉（William B.Adams，鐵路魚尾板的發明者）經常向英國芬斯堡（Finsbury）的牧師富克斯（Rev. Foxf）辦的月刊投稿，由筆友成為夫妻。撒拉二十一歲和他結婚。撒拉秉承父親的天分與個性，早年醉心戲劇，1837年在倫敦歌劇院擔演莎士比亞劇的女主角，至為成功，後因體弱多病而不得不輟。起初她很失望沮喪，隨後便專心寫作詩歌。她的姐姐伊莉莎是著名的作曲家，經常為她譜曲。撒拉為富克斯在1841年出版的150首的聖詩集《聖詩與聖歌》寫了63首詩歌，包括“Nearer My God To Thee”在內，她姐姐為該詩集提供了150首曲調。1841年，撒拉還寫了一本五幕的歌劇，描繪外邦人與早期基督教會的衝突及聖徒受難殉道的情況。1845年，她出版了一本兒童要理問答書，插有聖詩。1847年，她的姐姐伊莉莎患了肺結核，她因照顧姐姐而自己也患上了同樣的疾病。伊莉莎過世二十個月後，她於1848年8月14日也因肺病息勞於倫敦，享年四十三歲。在她短暫的四十三歲的年日裏，所有遇到她的人都能感受到她身上所發散的光和熱。
