《Formation》的錄製地點位於紐約Quad錄音室，由Mike WiLL Made-It和普盧斯製作，根據Big Freedia的作品改編，部分歌詞的創作靈感來源於美國紅龍蝦餐廳。歌曲背景即興男聲、伴唱出自Big Freedia和Anthony Barre。小號供給者為德里克·迪克西。混音工作由傑森·約書亞、斯圖亞特·懷特掌控，歌曲錄製工作也被後者承攬 ^[4-6]  。

《Formation》為種族話題發言，開場白石破天驚，話鋒指向光照派世界陰謀論 ^[9]  。《7/11》的樂色和碧昂絲在《7/11》中的唱法也在該曲中重現 ^[10-12]  。

《Formation》的MV由梅琳娜·馬特索卡斯執導，拍攝於洛杉磯，靈感來源於“颶風卡特里娜”、路易斯安那的人文、警察暴力和黑人種族主義。MV描繪並諷刺了“2005年新奧爾良颶風事件”時的社會狀況。碧昂絲的女兒在其中有客串 ^[13-15]  。
