無色油狀易燃液體，有強烈氣味。熔點為-6.3℃，沸點184℃，68.3℃（1.33kPa），相對密度1.0217(20/4℃)，折射率1.5863，閃點（開杯）70℃，自燃點770℃。露置空氣中或見光會逐漸變成棕色。能隨水蒸氣揮發。苯胺能與乙醇、乙醚、氯仿及其他許多種有機溶劑混溶。苯胺在水中溶解度（重量百分比）30℃為3.7%，50℃為4.2%，110℃時為8.0%。有鹼性，能與鹽酸生成鹽酸鹽，與硫酸生成硫酸鹽。

苯胺是重要的中間體。由苯胺生產的較重要產品達300種。世界苯胺生產廠家大約有80多個，年總生產能力已超過270萬t/a，產量約230萬t；主要消費領域為MDI，2000年其消費量約佔苯胺總消費量的84%。我國苯胺主要消費於MDI、染料工業、橡膠助劑、醫藥、農藥和有機中間體等方面。
