主要從事城市與區域發展及規劃研究，側重於城鎮化與水資源利用的耦合關係調控研究以及城鎮化的資源環境保障研究。提出了水資源約束力理論、基於城鎮化和水資源雙向流動視角的城鄉協調理論，建立了城鎮化與水資源利用的耦合關係模型，核算了水資源對城鎮化的約束強度，構建了城鎮化與水資源利用的情景模擬系統；近年來將資源環境要素由水資源為主向綜合資源環境方向進行了延伸拓展，重點研究了資源環境約束下的中國城鎮化與城市羣可持續發展機理與模式。

主持國家自然科學基金面上項目與青年基金項目、國家自然科學基金重大項目子課題、國家社會科學基金重大項目課題、國家重點研發計劃專題、中國科學院部署項目與課題、國家部委和地方政府委託課題33項。參與完成了國家自然科學基金重點項目，國家科技支撐計劃重大項目，973項目，中國科學院知識創新工程重要方向性項目和重大項目，地方政府委託的城市規劃、產業規劃、區域規劃項目等40項。在國內外主流期刊上發表學術論文70篇，其中第一或通訊作者論文54篇，第一或通訊作者的SCI/SSCI論文18篇。主編學術著作2部，副主編6部，參編13部。參與編寫省部級以上政府發文實施的規劃6份。 ^[2]
