少女芭西芭·艾維汀父母雙亡，寄住在姑母家，後來繼承舅父的遺產擔任了崴熱壩上農場的農場主。她年輕、美麗、有才幹，但虛榮心強，希望得到男人們的傾慕。年輕人奧克曾是一個小小牧場的農場主，一次突然事故使他破了產，於是他受僱做了芭西芭農場的牧人。奧克愛上了芭西芭，但不善表達自己的感情，愛慕虛榮的芭西芭拒絕了他。此時，另一位與芭西芭相鄰的農場主威廉·博爾德伍德也瘋狂追求芭西芭。但姑娘卻醉心於唐璜式的風流軍士特羅伊。他學過幾種語言，風流瀟灑，曾欺騙過純潔少女範妮·羅賓，後來又拋棄了她，範妮懷孕，慘死在救濟院。芭西芭很快與他結了婚，然而婚後生活並不快樂。不久特羅伊厭倦了農莊生活，他出走到海邊游泳遇險，被搭救後一年多沒有音信。博爾德伍德三番五次向芭西芭求婚，她被迫答應，正當博爾德伍德舉行晚會之時，特羅伊突然出現了。博爾德伍德感到希望破滅，開槍殺死了特羅伊，自己也神經錯亂，被終生監禁。最後芭西芭與勤勞善良的牧人奧克結了婚。他們的婚禮完全沒有聲張，可是，當天晚上，農場的工人們卻自動組織了樂隊來到他們的門前祝賀。
