蝴蝶魚是蝴蝶魚科蝴蝶魚屬魚類，又名蝶齒魚。該魚體長約12釐米，身體褐色，色彩單調，體形並無特異之處，但其胸腹鰭與一般魚類不同，胸鰭寬大，腹鰭各鰭條彼此分離，只在基部相連。雌雄容易區別，雄魚體色較深，臀鰭變粗大，適於交配；雌魚有明顯的不規則花紋，臀鰭正常。

游泳時似飛行中的蝴蝶，故名蝴蝶魚。蝴蝶魚約有18屬190種，中國產蝴蝶魚科有14屬約57種。

蝴蝶魚生活習性
蝴蝶魚大部分都生活在20公尺以內的淺水水域，是很典型的日行性魚類，白天出來找東西吃、交配，晚上才躲在礁洞裏面休息。覓食時，或羣遊，或成對，或獨遊。食性變異大，有的從礁岩表面啄食躲藏在縫隙裏的小型無脊椎動物及藻類，有的在水層中撿食浮游動物，有的只吃活珊瑚的水螅蟲等。行動迅速，稍受驚動即躲入珊瑚礁或岩石縫中。它們生活史中需要經過一段長時間的漂流期，而使得人工繁殖不易成功。
