多恩與喬治·赫伯特和安德魯·馬韋爾同屬最偉大的玄學派詩人。他的創作他不僅影響了他同時代的詩人，還影響到艾略特、約翰·克婁·蘭塞姆（John Crowe Ransom,）、愛倫·泰特（Allen Tate）等二十世紀時的詩人。與其他玄學派詩人一樣，多恩的詩作也運用比附比喻（conceits）（精巧、驚人的比喻），也從日常生活和廣博的學識中尋找意象。在玄學派詩人中，他能將強烈的情感和學識上的獨創和練達加以完美結合。作品包括愛情詩、諷刺詩、格言詩、宗教詩以及佈道文等。詩歌節奏有力，語言生動，想象奇特而大膽，常使用莎士比亞式的機智的隱喻，這些特點在他的詩集《歌與短歌》中體現得十分明顯。他於1631 年3月31日卒於倫敦。
