彼得·威廉·科薩爾（Pieter Willem Korthals）在1839年發表的專著《豬籠草的性別（Over het geslacht Nepenthes）》中對小豬籠草進行了正式的描述。
小豬籠草形態特徵
小豬籠草是一種攀緣植物，可以長到10米高，但它更常見的是攀爬小樹和灌木。它也可以生長成大叢生，在幼苗時期的蓮座形態和攀緣莖基部的側芽上或沿着地面生長的莖上產生大量的地籠。下位籠子很小，呈圓柱形，基部呈球狀，最高可達11釐米，翼裝籠蓋寬可達5毫米。上位籠與下位籠相似，但高度可達15釐米，唇部狹窄，翼裝籠蓋減小為狹窄的脊。在豬籠草中，唇是圍繞這些植物消化籠入口的組織反射環（或部分環）。它通常具有鋒利的、懸垂的牙齒狀突起，有助於保留獵物，並且經常佈滿分泌花蜜的腺體。水罐有多種顏色，從綠色到外部的深紫色，內表面有紅色斑點。小豬籠草的一個重要區別特徵是葉基部的結構，它沒有明顯的葉柄和流生的邊緣（即，葉緣沿着節間延伸一段距離）。

花序從細長籠的上部分支的頂端產生。這個花序是直立的，由沿着垂直莖開出的花組成。花朵被描述為白色、綠色、淺紅色或棕色。在蘇門答臘島，該物種由飛蛾授粉。授粉後，花朵發育成稱為膠囊的特殊果實，成熟時會破裂釋放種子，然後風吹散。
