基里巴斯語基里巴斯語的發展
在基里巴斯獨立之前,基里巴斯被稱為“吉爾伯特羣島”是英國的保護地。1788年,這個羣島以其發現者托馬斯·吉爾伯特(Thomas Gilbert)船長而命名
基里巴斯語的拼寫系統出現在19世紀中葉,新教傳教士用其向居民宣傳教義 。同時,其他傳教士也設計了不同的拼寫系統。
20世紀70年代,獨立後的基里巴斯政府開始講基里巴斯語的拼寫及發音標準化,並隨後出版了基里巴斯語字典,這些都推進了基里巴斯語文學的發展。
