這本刊物由德國心理學家威廉·馮特於1881年創辦。他本想把名字叫做《心理學研究》，但是因為已經有一種刊物叫了這個名字，不過那本刊物是關於通靈術和心靈感應現象的。幾年後馮特設法把期刊名改成了《心理學研究》。
