1941年1月9日出生於美國紐約Staten島上.我們經常聽到的與"民謠皇帝"Bob Dylan齊名的"民謠女皇"的稱號就是指的Joan Baez.Baez作為民謠界女性演繹者的地位是在1959年Newprot民謠節上的演出後奠定的.她對民謠音樂的理解加上天生的嗓音使得她成為50年代之後民謠音樂中的一棵奇葩.

Baez最初的四張專輯均取材於美洲與英國的傳統民謠,然而隨着民權運動的發展,她開始逐漸投身於抗議運動,這才讓Baez成為真正有內容與個性的Joan Baez.在JOAN BAEZ IN CONCERT,PART 2專輯中的一曲《We Shall Overcome》,從多方面體現出了Baez的音樂個性,從而成為其音樂中的經典之一.同張專輯中還包括了Bob Dylan的幾首歌:《Don't Think Twice》,《It's All Right》.Joan Baez帶着這些有力的歌四處進行巡迴演出,從音樂發麪推動了民權運動,同時也孕育了她與Bob Dylan之間浪漫的愛情故事.多年之中,Baez演繹了Dylan多首經典曲目:Farewell Angelina,Love Is Just A Four Letter Word......在這段日子與以後的歲月中,Baez越發的投身於非暴力的抗議運動.她在60年代中創立了非暴力學習協會,自己也因為參加反站集會而兩次入獄.

Diamonds and rust被認為是Joan Baez最出色的一首歌曲之一. 這首曲子是以Baez和Dylan當年亦師亦友的感情為主軸描寫的一段Joan自己的感情.歌詞或可説晦澀但卻藴含真情.
