暌違近兩年，「_genic」作為安室的第12張錄音室原創專輯，總計發行CD+DVD，CD+Blu-ray & CD Only三種版本。

本作以“復興 (Revival)”為主題，由於安室的第42張實體單曲「Brighter Day」的曲風和概念與之不符，故本作的收錄曲均為未曾發表的新曲，而並未收錄「Brighter Day」。本作名稱中的“genic”意為“基因的”，而“_”則可以採用其他名詞替代作為“genic”的前綴，例如“Soundgenic”，“Dancegenic”亦或是“Photogenic”，其象徵着安室是與生俱來，歌舞全能並活躍在聚光燈下的時代歌姬，同時也給聽眾提供了一個可以自由想象的空間。

融入上世紀八九十年代的放克與電子及舞曲風，本作收錄包括安室吐露心聲的日式抒情「Anything」，潮流尖端的電音舞曲「Stranger」，俏皮合成風的生日讚歌「Birthday」，相邀虛擬偶像初音未來助陣的靈動電子「B Who I Want 2 B」，MV帶給聽眾新奇體驗的合成放克「Golden Touch」在內的13首全新曲目。安室的錄音室原創專輯全部由新曲構成也是其出道以來的首次。
