這首歌靈感來自於小野洋子的一次訪談，歌曲描述了婦女的屈從於男性和男性沙文主義。這首歌在英國遭到了所有電台和BBC的禁播，因為nigger（黑鬼）這個帶有歧視意義的詞。但是這首歌得到了很多黑人的支持，美國國會議員長德拉姆斯，説，“如果你定義“黑鬼”作為人的生活方式，，你不必因為黑色的皮膚而是一個黑鬼在這個社會。在美國大多數人都是黑人！”

在1972年的迪克卡維特節目，約翰列儂説，愛爾蘭革命這傑姆斯康納利是一個靈感，列儂引用康納利的女奴隸的定義解釋女性。
