這首歌是邁克爾傑克遜專輯《thriller》中的第一首歌，也是傑克遜1984年勝利、1987-1988年真棒和2009年未完成的就是這樣演唱會的開場曲目。該曲的單曲碟於1983年5月發行，2008年MJ和akon推出了這首歌的混音合作版，並收錄到了thriller 25中。

這隻單曲並沒有取得如單曲“Beat It”那樣的成功，但必須要説明的是：當時《Thriller》專輯正在瘋狂銷售中，而這樣導致的必然後果是專輯將吃掉單曲的市場(而且單曲內又沒有太多新的素材加入)，同時，該單曲也沒有任何音樂錄影配合銷售(不像前兩隻單曲)。但無論怎麼樣，這隻單曲的發售和電台廣播，使當時的《Thriller》專輯繼續穩居排行榜冠軍位置。“Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'”發行於1983年6月。是《Thriller》專輯內第4只單曲。它在英國排名最高達到了第8名，而在美國則名列第5。在美

國它還沒有獲得銷量認證，但它在Top 100排行榜內停留了可觀的15周時間。在R&B排行榜內它也取得了第5名的佳績。

在世界其他國家，該曲表現不一，在多數地方它沒能打進前5名，但它在丹麥排名第1。

隨着2008年thriller25週年的發行，該曲的新版混音促使Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'在許多國家獲得了更高的名次，例如;澳大利亞、意大利等等。 ^[1]

Michael Jackson在他三次個人巡演中都表演了“Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'”。在The Jacksons的勝利巡演和“Bad”巡演中它被排在表演曲目首位——歌名的意義也恰如其分。在“Dangerous”巡演中它位列“Jam”後，而在“HIStory”巡演中僅次於開場串燒。　每場演唱會上它都會被唱到。在部分“Dangerous”和“HIStory”演唱會中，Michael唱這首歌曲時，嗓音出現沙啞、喘息，主要是因為舞蹈動作的激烈所致，也可能是喉炎的問題。但在許多場演唱會中對該曲的表演還是非常成功的。遺憾的是，我們看到的為數不多的電視台播出版本(如“Dangerous巡演”布加勒斯特站和“HIStory巡演第2階段德國慕尼黑站) 中的表演，正是Michael表現最差的時候。這使很多人錯誤地認為他不能現場唱好這首歌——實際上，他在如“HIStory巡演第2階段的芬蘭站上的表演有力地證明了他能唱好它。
