創作專輯《A Rush of Blood to the Head》時，酷玩樂隊主唱克里斯·馬汀總感覺少了些什麼。於是，克里斯·馬汀在英國利物浦一間昏暗的小屋子裏用一架走調的舊鋼琴進行了創作。起初，克里斯·馬汀想以喬治·哈里森的歌曲《Isn't It a Pity》為創作模板來寫歌，但他始終無法寫出滿意的作品。隨後，他立馬創作出了《The Scientist》
