由Aaron Dessner、Bryce Dessner、Scott Devendorf、Bryan Devendorf兩組兄弟檔和主唱Matt Berninger成軍於1999年的Cincinatti, Ohio，後轉戰紐約布魯克林的五人樂團The National，兼容八O年代英式搖滾、獨立鄉村、乃至Joy Division後龐克風骨的低調音樂美學，總讓人不禁想起The Smith、Tindersticks、Wilco、Nick Cave等一連串經典的名字。然而，The National卻不是一隻簡單的拷貝貓，由主唱Matt Berninger酷似Stuart Staples的低沉抑鬱嗓音，伴隨Nick Drake般雲淡風清的惆悵吉他音色，飽滿厚實的鼓擊，以及不時墜入這個自溺空間的琴音和管絃樂器，The National建立起一道獨特的音樂魅力，遊移在温暖、冷冽、温柔、暴戾間的反差性格，宛如Joy Division和Tindersticks的超完美綜合體，讓大西洋彼岸以一派慘情樂風自豪的英國佬也為之傾倒。
