這首歌並非通常意義上的現代流行，歌詞的內容是憂傷的，歌曲的速度也較為緩慢。歌曲創作在列儂與小野洋子在法國巴黎的蜜月時期，還有那次著名的牀上和平運動。
在1969年的4月14日，列儂把這首歌帶到了保羅麥卡特尼家中，當夜就錄製完成。

這首歌並非真正意義上的披頭士集體的創作，因為錄音只是列儂和麥卡特尼完成的。喬治哈里森正在度假，林格斯塔爾正在拍攝電影《神奇聖誕節》。
在他的自傳中，麥卡尼回憶，列儂突然有了一個靈感的歌曲並建議他們倆應該立即錄音，無需等待其他甲殼蟲樂隊返回。鑑於這有點不尋常的情況，錄音的時候，包括以下交換：
Lennon (on guitar): "Go a bit faster, Ringo!"（這是列儂在模仿喬治哈里森的角色）
