《Somewhere I Belong》源自主唱查斯特·貝寧頓在回聲吉他上彈奏出來的一段旋律，主唱麥克·信田把這段旋律分為了四個不同部分，再加以轉換。然後他再將其分為更多個部分並打亂了和音的順序

。為了讓這首歌達到完美，麥克·信田和查斯特·貝寧頓寫了40多種完全不同的副歌，直到挑出最佳的版本為止

《Somewhere I Belong》充滿沮喪的歌詞表現出Linkin Park對環境的不適應。這首中度節奏的歌曲穿插着鬥嘴般的説唱搖滾和樂隊和聲，這一點是不足為奇的。但是比較專輯《Meteora》中的其他歌曲，《Somewhere I Belong》暗示着樂隊成長的願望，歌曲魔幻般的引子聽起來好象逐漸消失的手風琴演奏片段發展為瘋狂的吉他合奏
