理查德·約翰遜1927年7月30日出生在英格蘭艾塞克斯倫敦市切爾西，是法國人Louisa Olive 和Keith Holcombe Johnson的兒子。

約翰遜在英國菲爾斯特學校讀完書後便去了英國皇家戲劇藝術學院深造。他第一次專業登台演出是1944在曼徹斯特參演John Gielgud（約翰·吉爾古德）的公司製作的《Hamlet》（《哈姆雷特》）。
理查德·約翰遜1945到1948在英國海軍服役，之後在1959年初次登台，出現在美高梅電影公司的電影《Never So Few》中擔任聯合主演，並與演員弗蘭克·辛納屈（Frank Sinatra）和吉娜·勞洛勃麗吉達（Gina Lollobrigida）合作。隨後，他與美高梅簽約每年出演一部電影，合作長達六年。
