Petula Clark

承襲自父母的天生美好歌喉，使得她從三歲起就開始跟母親一起在教堂裏歌唱。發現女兒歌唱才華的父親，決心扶植她來實現自己未能達成的美夢。於是在她九歲那年，透過關係，安排小佩屈拉去參加BBC的一個現場廣播節目。當時正是大戰期間，在排練的時候，忽然響起了空襲警報，觀眾立刻一陣慌亂。節目的製作人趕快問現場有沒有人願意上台歌唱，來安撫觀眾。佩屈拉自告奮勇的登台，果然成功的讓大眾安定下來。就這樣，她成了節目的常客。 ^[1] 

1964年，在先後有許多支單曲轟動法國之後，她的唱片製作人湯尼海奇（Tony Hatch）帶著一堆自己寫的歌曲來找她，並且建議她，應該可以再度嘗試用英語來灌錄唱片了。佩屈拉克拉克回答説，她願意回到英國發展，但前提是必須要先找到合適的歌曲。在她跑到廚房去泡茶來招待客人的時候，湯尼海奇隨手在鋼琴上彈奏了一段自己剛剛譜出來的旋律，她在廚房裏聽到了，立刻衝出來，問湯尼那是什麼歌曲。湯尼表示，那首歌叫做「Downtown」，但是還沒有歌詞。佩屈拉説，那首歌曲很棒，假如湯尼可以寫出相配的歌詞，她願意灌錄，並且藉以回到英國歌壇。 ^[1] 

這首歌曲錄製完成後，先是在英國推出，得到了第二名，接著又進軍美國市場。過去，從1951到1962年間，早已在英國、澳洲、加拿大以及歐洲各地都相當有知名度的佩屈拉克拉克，曾經在美國推出過好些單曲，但是都不太成功。「Downtown」的推出，改變了一切。1964年的十二月十九日，這首歌第一次打進美國排行，獲得第八十七名，隨即開始急速的往上竄升，五個星期後，就在1965年的一月二十三日，奪得了美國的冠軍，蟬聯兩週，使她成為搖滾年代以來第一個奪得美國冠軍的英國女歌手。 ^[1]
