終於麥莉在2013年Billboard Music Awards公佈新單曲發行日期（6月3日），並宣稱會與她以往的音樂風格有所不同，要帶給聽眾們一個全新的麥莉，這是她三年後首次發行個人新單曲。2013年1月18日，《公告牌》宣稱麥莉已經與RCA簽約以在2013年晚些時候發佈一張專輯，並確認Dr. Luke是專輯合作者之一。第四張錄音室專輯 Bangerz 的主打單曲“We Can't Stop ”於6月3日推出。“We Can't Stop ”在Billboard Hot 100排名第二，在30個國家的iTunes排行榜奪下冠軍位置。隨着音樂錄音帶推出,此曲獲得非常大的反響，音樂錄音帶在Youtube推出24小時內獲得1千700萬的點擊率，打破Youtube VEVO的紀錄，並於一星期內獲得四千六百多萬的點擊率，即使有很多負面批評關於麥莉的新形象，不過歌曲卻獲得巨大的成功，是麥莉繼續《Party In the USA》和《The Climb》之後最成功的單曲之一。“We Can't Stop”音樂錄音帶推出與一個月內在Youtube點擊率高達九千多萬，是2013年最成功、最爭議、最具話題性的音樂錄音帶。《We Can't Stop》的下載率在少於六星期內超過一百萬，是2013年最暢銷的單曲之一，發佈後僅37天已達到1億次點擊率，還打破了Youtube VEVO的紀錄，成為點擊率速度最快的視頻，由VEVO認證。8月25日，麥莉為2013年MTV音樂錄像帶大獎作表演嘉賓，與Robin Thicke合作演出《We Can't Stop》和《Blurred Lines》，獲得媒體極大的關注，演出獲得極大爭議及劣評，均因麥莉演出過於火辣，不過卻錄得10.1萬的收視率。
