《Love On Top》是一首講述關於甜蜜的愛情故事的歌，靈感來自碧昂絲當時休假的時光。她寫歌時在20世紀90年代的節奏藍調音樂中找到不少靈感。此外，費拉·庫蒂、阿黛爾·阿德金斯、芙蘿倫絲機進份子和王子等音樂人的音樂作品對她有很大啓發。錄製歌曲時，她在歌曲中嘗試了更多的演唱技巧，她改變了她以往的演唱風格，選擇重新在靈魂樂方面下手，並嘗試用她在現場演出中的唱法在錄音室裏唱歌，在歌曲中給予了自己更多的自由度

《Love On Top》以四二拍進行，節奏比較簡單，融合了流行樂、節奏藍調和靈魂樂，歌曲開頭就以人聲和“手打響指”的阿卡貝拉式的開始，然後有貝斯，鋼琴，鼓，薩克斯等多種樂器進行演奏，節奏動感。歌曲開頭以及第一段主歌歌詞表達了戀人之間那種甜蜜的愛情瞬間，講述了戀愛中的美好故事。歌曲第二段主歌講述也是甜蜜的愛情故事，但感覺更是貼近自己來表達那美好的經歷，和男友喝的小醉在一起度過的甜美的夜晚。歌曲副歌講述的是戀人給自己帶來的一切，彷彿戀人就是上天安排好的禮物，值得付出所有，把愛放在了第一位。在歌曲後半部分連續四次升調重複副歌部分，多次提到歌名“Love On Top”，點明瞭愛在第一，把歌曲推向高潮，最後音樂以漸弱的方式結束整首歌。
歌曲大多以人聲的合唱形式為和聲。這首歌非常考驗演唱者的功底，聲音跨越很大，碧昂絲在演唱這首歌使用了黑人R&B唱法中的咽音，用大量的胸上共鳴然後把喉頭的位置降低，製造出寬廣又厚實的音色。碧昂絲對音色的把控遊刃有餘，不管是低音還是高音部分。碧昂絲偶爾唱幾個怒音，強大的氣息支撐和熟練的胸腔共鳴，讓音色聽上去十分飽滿。在長音，尾音的處理上也都用到了顫音的技巧，她在拖長音的時候對顫音的處理非常有把握
