James Alan Hetfield,1963年8月3日在美國加利福利亞州洛杉磯縣Downey,是美國重金屬樂隊Metallica的創建者,主要歌曲創作者,主唱,節奏吉他.

歐洲最暢銷的GT雜誌在它的創刊第一百期裏，評選出的世界50位吉他大師排名，James排名第十二。

James Hetfield (詹姆斯 海特菲爾德)於1963年8月3日在美國加利福利亞州洛杉磯縣Downey,具有英國人,愛爾蘭人,蘇格蘭人以及德國血統.(基督教科學派).他的母親是個非常虔誠的基督教科學派信徒,他母親忠於信仰,不願接受醫學治療而死於癌症.

他母親的去世影響他日後的創作作品,"Mama Said", "Dyers Eve"和"The God That Failed"都是有關他父母的,"Until It Sleeps"則是有關癌症.

James Hetfield在9歲開始學習鋼琴演奏,另外他經常和他的哥哥一起玩鼓,14歲學吉他.童年時期,對James Hetfield影響最大的樂隊是Aerosmith,也是他之後練吉他的原因. Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Queen, Led Zeppelin以及Thin Lizzy則是之後對James產生了極大的影響.

在十幾歲的時候,James和玩伴們組建了第一支樂隊,名為Obsession.

在他母親去世後,James搬家到了加州Brea,在Brea Olinda高中上學,在學校期間組了新樂隊Phantom Lord,直到又搬回Downey為止.

回到Downey後,搬到好朋友Ron McGovney家裏一起住.之後組了新樂隊Leather Charm,這隻樂隊可以説是Metallica前身了,Ron McGovney彈貝斯,他們在一起經常翻唱一些其他樂隊的歌,比如Iron Maiden的"Remember Tomorrow".後來樂隊一鼓手和吉他手相繼離開樂隊了,於是,James便在當地報紙The Recycler上刊登廣告,最後通過這廣告認識了Lars Ulrich,不久決定成立Metallica,這一年是1981年.

Metallica成立之初,James並不喜歡擔任樂隊主唱,希望能再加入一主音吉他和主唱,曾邀請過Armored Saint的主唱John Bush(後來是Anthrax主唱).但最後Metallica成型的陣容是James Hetfield還是主唱兼節奏吉他,Lars Ulrich鼓手, Dave Mustaine主音吉他,Ron McGovney貝斯.

1983年,James和Lars認為Dave Mustaine有嚴重的酗酒,決定把Dave開除出Metallica,同時把Exodus的吉他手Kirk Hammett招進Metallica,而Dave Mustaine則是坐了4天的大巴回到了加州,日後則自己組建了樂隊Megadeth.

James多次受傷,最出名的就是1992年8月和Guns N' Roses聯合在加拿大蒙特利爾奧林匹克體育場現場的煙火燒傷事故,這現場後來因為Guns N' Roses的主唱Axl Rose的原因,演變為大規模歌迷騷亂.James診斷為三級燒傷,Metal Church吉他手John Marshall替代吉他部分.James還經常玩滑板使得手臂骨折.

在錄製St. Anger期間,James酗酒,並且離開Metallica幾個月,不過最後還是回來並且完成錄製該專輯.在紀錄片Some Kind of Monster中可以瞭解到James該期間的生活.

2008年9月12日,Metallica最新專輯Death Magnetic發行,同樣是自1991年黑專輯之後連續第一週在超過30個國家Billboard上排名第一.

在Metallica樂隊生活之外,James很熱衷於各種户外活動,比如打獵,滑板,滑水,畫畫,還有在車庫改裝汽車或者摩托車,收藏古典吉他,他還是Oakland Raiders球隊的忠實球迷.

James和Francesca Tomasi在1997年8月17號結婚,有三個孩子.
