Deep Purple與Led Zeppelin、Black Sabbath並稱為英國搖滾樂的奠基人，深紫樂隊儘管歷經8代成員的變革，（不同時期曾經參與過樂隊的成員竟多達14位），卻一直如同一棵常青樹，保持着旺盛的生命力，活躍在國際樂壇，可謂搖滾樂歷史上的一支不朽的傳奇。　深紫樂隊自1968年樂隊成立以來，三十年的時間裏，共發表了18張專輯，而單曲，精選，及各種不同版本的再版唱片更是多達140餘張之多。全球唱片總銷量超過1億張，僅次於甲殼蟲樂隊，並且遙遙領先於滾石樂隊。

Deep purple樂隊的出現，帶動了整個重金屬風潮，比較起另兩個重金屬元老團，Deep purple 不像 Led zepplin 那樣接近藍調，也不像 Black sabbath 那樣信奉黑暗主義，他們所發展的是由鍵盤手 John lord 所領導的古典式的編曲，與吉他英雄Ritchie Blackmore 所主持的高技術 Solo，他們的這種取向，影響了後世不知多少的吉他手，形成的吉他英雄主義，更是主宰了80 年代正統的金屬樂。
