Give Me One Reason

1964年， Tracy Chapman 出生於美國俄亥俄州的克利夫蘭的一個工人家庭， 她從小開始學習彈奏吉他，後嘗試創作歌曲。高中畢業後， 特蕾西．查普曼因獲取少數民族學生獎學金得以到大學就讀深造。在大學時， 她主修人類學和非洲人文學。求學期間，她迷戀上了民謠搖滾， 開始在咖啡館裏彈唱自己的作品。她的歌旋律簡單，朗朗上口，歌詞深刻，發人深省。

這位創作型的歌手在 80年代一經亮相，便成萬眾矚目的焦點。Tracy Chapman的首張同名專輯於 1988 年春天出版，這張專輯受到熱烈好評， 其中單曲《Fast Car》爬升到了排行榜第 6名的位置。這張專輯為Tracy Chapman 贏得了當年的 3 項格萊美獎，其中包括“年度最佳新人獎”。 首張專輯的成功為她後來的事業發展鋪平了道路，幾個月後，她應邀參加為慶祝南非黑人運動領袖納爾遜·曼德拉 70歲生日而舉行的音樂會。 Tracy Chapman 的歌風是 70 年代城市鄉謠的延續， 不過她的音樂更富時代氣息，對社會問題的揭示也更犀利。在她的音樂中，反對種族歧視、呼籲民權一向佔有主導的地位。

Tracy Chapman首戰告捷後，又於次年推出了第 2張專輯《Crossroads》， 這張專輯進一步反映了社會底層人民的處境，更具政治色彩。 不幸的是這一次的出擊不太順利，《Crossroads》銷量不濟，並從排行榜第 9 名迅速下滑，滑出榜單。而 1992 年發行的專輯《Matters of the Hearts》遭到了更糟的厄運，評論家對其評價慘不忍睹。

1996年 Tracy Chapman 的第 4 張專輯《New Beginning》出版， 這張專輯得到了比以往任何一次都多的讚譽。 其中帶有布魯斯味的單曲《Give Me One Reason》高踞排行榜的冠軍，《New Beginning》也打入了專輯榜的前 10 名。

2001年她的專輯《Telling Stories》出爐，再一次的帶給人們一個大大的驚喜。
