《Girl on Fire》的創作靈感來自艾莉西亞·凱斯做過的一次採訪，一位記者用“燃燒着的女孩”來形容艾莉西亞·凱斯，艾莉西亞·凱斯為此創作了該歌曲。艾麗西亞·凱斯想通過《Girl On Fire》呼籲大家要拋掉生活中所有的負面因素，掌控好生活。 ^[2-5]

《Girl On Fire》表達了艾麗西亞的燃燒意志 ^[3]  ，是唱給所有女性的歌曲，鼓勵女性獨立安排並掌控自己的生活，不必在意旁人的眼光。 ^[9]  該歌曲捨去了艾麗西亞標誌性的R&B風格和複雜的編曲，曲調變化不大，但留下了艾麗西亞鏗鏘有力的嘶吼唱腔，並多了節奏感十足的古典味。 ^[3] 

該歌曲的原版是艾麗西亞·凱斯向來擅長的大氣磅礴的中板歌曲，鼓點厚重，節奏分明，與艾麗西亞的另一首歌曲《No One》異曲同工。妮琪·米娜參與演唱的Inferno版僅適合愛好説唱的聽眾。藍燈版本雖然將《Girl On Fire》編配簡化、節拍放慢，比較單薄，但能更突出艾麗西亞的沙啞音色。 ^[10] 

《Girl On Fire》的MV由Sophie Muller執導，於2012年10月19日首播。MV展現了艾麗西亞·凱斯作為家庭主婦的光輝形象，她操勞着家務事，拖地、整理玩具、照顧老人和管理財務，時不時施展瑪麗·波賓斯式的魔法，還不忘和孩子們一起玩耍，她依然很享受着一切。 ^[11]
