歌曲由兩位紐約布魯克林的創作者——安吉拉·亨特和珍妮·塞維爾出於對家鄉的思念之情而創作。2009年2月，兩人在一次海外旅途中分享了她們的思鄉情感，並簡單寫下了這首歌曲以表對家鄉的渴望。一個月後，她們將歌曲秘密送到了Roc Nation唱片公司，希望Jay Z能夠採納這首歌曲，但卻受到了負面的評價。之後在一次聚會上，EMI唱片的Jon "Big Jon" Platt聽到了歌曲，並在之後將歌曲送到了Jay Z手上。在聽過後Jay Z喜歡上了這首歌曲，他保留了歌曲的副歌部分，並立即錄製了歌曲。而當被詢問到演唱副歌部分的合適人選時，亨特推薦了艾麗西亞·凱斯 ^[11-12]  。

歌曲採樣自1970年The Moments歌曲《Love on a Two-Way Street》 ^[13]  。

2009年，艾麗西亞·凱斯推出了歌曲的個人版本《Empire State Of Mind Part II: Broken Down》，該版被收錄在艾麗西亞·凱斯於2009年12月15日發行的錄音室專輯《Element of Freedom》 ^[14]  。

《Empire State of Mind》是缺乏生機的紐約市的吶喊之聲 ^[17]  。整首歌曲有着振奮人心的力量，在製作上將古典與現代元素無縫隙地結合在了一起，而歌曲中鏗鏘有力的鋼琴和絃聲則被艾麗西亞·凱斯強勁有力的吼叫聲所潤色。在歌曲中Jay-Z致敬了從勞動節遊行到《Vogue》雜誌美國版的主編安娜·温圖爾，並提及了紐約的地標性景觀，在不經意間擔當了導遊 ^[18-20]  。

歌曲的音樂錄影帶於2009年10月30日釋出，由海普·威廉姆斯執導拍攝，選取了美國紐約繁忙地段作為外景的拍攝對象。視頻首先以黑白色調的形式展現，而在最後一分鐘左右的時候變為全綵，拍攝下了艾麗西亞·凱斯在紐約時代廣場中心地域彈奏鋼琴以及在曼哈頓天際線演唱的鏡頭 ^[21-24]  。而在音樂錄影帶中Jay Z則出現在紐約各處完成其説唱部分的拍攝 ^[25]  。
