該樂隊成立之後，很快便錄製了第一張demo《wrath of tyrant》，這使candlelight公司開始注意他們。他們也進行了人員變動，samoth成為吉它手，bard fraust加入樂隊擔任鼓手。91年末，樂隊再次進入錄音棚錄製他們與enslaved樂隊的split ablum。此張專集反映了emperor早期的風格。隨後的一年裏，mortiis離開樂隊，tchort取代了他的位置。

1993年夏，樂隊開始錄製他們的第一張專輯《in the nightside eclipse》，專輯1994正式發行。這時他們已無可爭辯的成為blackmetal樂迷心中最重要的樂隊。但在此期間，樂隊也遇到了不少麻煩，由於個人信仰的關係，emperor將意味着失去samoth和faust。最終，他們永遠失去了faust，他因殺人被判8年徒刑。Samoth幸運的留下了，於是樂隊開始重新編排，新的貝斯手alver和客串鼓手加入.

儘管樂隊遇到了許多麻煩，但最終emperor還是變得更加強大，經過samoth的努力，enslaved的鼓手trym作為永久成員加入樂隊。96年末，經過充分磨合，樂隊又重新進入錄音棚。Ep《reverence》的發表標誌着他們又重新歸來。97年，樂隊發表了第二張專輯《anthems to the welkin at dusk》。一張具有史詩性的作品，不僅展示出邪惡的氣氛，一種悽美的感覺也強烈的震撼着樂迷們。該專輯同時被英國的terrorizer雜誌和美國的metal maniacs雜誌評為當年的最佳重金屬專輯。

樂隊發表了第二張專輯後，emperor內部又一次發生人員變動，在參加完dynamo和millwaukee 重金屬音樂節後，樂隊宣佈貝斯手alver離隊。所以在他們其後的專輯《ix equilibrium》中所有的bass部分都由ihsahn擔任完成。

《ix equilibrium》是樂隊有史以來最令人感到窒息一張專輯，與氣勢磅礴的《anthems to the welkin at dusk》相比，emperor並沒有繼承上張專輯的風格，更確切的説，不可再單純的認為emperor是一支blackmetal樂隊。在新專輯中，你可以體會到傳統重金屬的元素——歌劇式的嗓音，模仿布魯斯的節奏。當然專輯也少不了emperor的標誌——交響樂式的吉它效果。此張專輯發表後各個媒介褒貶不一，也許一些emperor的老歌迷不太能接受他們的變化，在他們心中，《in the nightside eclipse》和《anthems to the welkin at dusk》是blackmetal的聖經。但對於emperor本身來説，這是一張充滿實驗性的嘗試。可以説他們是成功的，樂隊在重金屬樂壇的地位也逐步提升。具最新消息，emperor的下一張專輯將會和大名鼎鼎的樂隊korn的製作人ross robinson合作完成，當然這只不過是消息罷了，但很有可能樂隊的下一張專輯會更令人吃驚。總的來説，emperor的三張專輯風格各不相同，第一張是一張非常經典的傳統blackmetal風格。並配以宏大的背景音樂。突出表現了挪威blackmetal注重氣氛的特點。而第二張則注入了emperor自己的特點，其強大的表現力可以讓每一個聽到他們音樂的人受到觸動。加上樂隊成員技術上的不斷成熟，更能完美的體現黑暗的精神。而第三張專輯則是對blackmetal的一種探索，作品不再拘泥於blackmetal的傳統，各類音樂元素的混合使專輯實際上變得更加深沉。

Emperor was one of the most well-known and most influential black metal bands of the nineties, setting the standard for symphonic Norwegian black metal with their seminal albums In The Nightside Eclipse and Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk, both considered essential releases in their field. They were also mixed up in the Euronymous/Grishnachh affair (see the Mayhem for a bit more information on that scene), leading to the arrests and sentences of two of their major players (Samoth and Faust). Nevertheless, they persevered, deciding to retire on a high note following the release of 2001's Prometheus album. The members have since concentrated on other bands such as Zyklon and Peccatum.

2005年後重組，進行巡演，併發行Live Inferno，CD1收錄在美國巡演的實況，CD2收錄Wacken Open Air音樂節實況，DVD同樣收錄Wacken Open Air。

Emperor已於2013年再度重組，並在2014年Wacken Open Air舉行In The Nightside Eclipse 20週年演唱會，據説鼓手Faust會作為鼓手出場。
