《Earth Song》是邁克爾·傑克遜在奧地利巡演時，在一家旅館創作的。邁克爾·傑克遜認為，大自然正在努力彌補人類對其造成的傷害。隨着生態失衡的繼續以及各種環境問題的出現，邁克爾·傑克遜認為地球非常痛苦。邁克爾·傑克遜想要人們聽到地球的聲音，於是在奧地利時靈感突現，創作了《Earth Song》

。歌詞看似有些簡單重複，甚至格式僵化，實則句句扣人心絃，發人深省。該曲伴着撕心裂肺的呼喊，人們彷彿看到有人站在世界之巔，帶領着全世界的人歌唱。在聽眾腦海中緩緩切換的鏡頭裏，出現了貧卉的大地、硝煙中滿臉恐慌的孩子，褪色的夢想，還有天使無力展開的翅膀

邁克爾·傑克遜在MV中扮演了一個失落的救世主形象，他在為遭人為破壞的環境、被無辜屠戮的野生動物和被戰火摧殘的世界而悲泣。後段以倒放手法在熒幕上完成了一個現實中永遠不可能實現的夢境，好像一切都可以回到最初美好和諧的境界。在MV的結尾處，製作者打出字幕告訴觀眾：MV攝製於四大洲選出的四個地方（亞馬遜雨林、克羅地亞、坦桑尼亞和紐約），就在攝製的同時和之後不久，一些地方的森林和動物遭到毀滅，而有的地方依然籠罩着戰爭的陰霾
