這首歌的背景是Gaga在2013年2月由於腳傷被迫取消Born This Way Ball巡演，所以《Dope》最初被命名為《I Wanna Be with You》。而這首歌也正是為Born This Way Ball取消以及那些因此而失望的Little Monsters而寫的。巡演取消後，她在Twitter寫道：“I would rather be poor and happy than rich and alone”正是Dope的歌詞。 ^[3]
