《Chasing Pavements》的創作靈感來源於阿黛爾·阿德金斯一段六個月的戀愛經歷：阿黛爾·阿德金斯在酒吧目擊男友和其他女人曖昧，一氣之下打了男友一拳。被男友被趕出酒吧後，她一個人沒落地在走在人行道上，針對她真正的追求進行思考。這時她突發靈感並一鼓作氣，將歌曲構想錄在手機上，從而創作出了該歌曲^[3-4] 。
