大家對其最熟悉的California Dreamin'，電影《阿甘正傳》（Forrest Gump）中，阿甘在越南的雨中給Jenny寫信時，響起的背景音樂就是這首加州夢想。在王家衞導演的電影《重慶森林》中王菲也搖頭晃腦地哼唱着這美妙的旋律。

二十世紀六十年代中期，The Mamas & the Papas在正出現的反文化潮流和廣闊的流行市場間搭起了一座橋樑。在他們熱情奔放、和諧美妙的音樂中，以民謠搖滾為基音，伴隨着他們獨特的形象和生活方式，因而非常易於被推廣接受。1964年，樂隊在加州成立。當時的成員為John Phillips和妻子Michelle、Cass Elliott、Denny Doherty。1965年，樂隊受僱於Dunhill唱片公司，負責給公司旗下藝人伴唱。有感於該樂隊的努力工作和John Phillips超凡的作曲天賦——“California Dreamin‘”(加州之夢)，公司和他們簽了約。樂隊在1966年推出了單曲“California Dreaming”，在排行榜排名第4，共售出了100萬張。同年，“Monday, Monday”、“I Saw Her Again”都先後進入排行榜前5名。　儘管音樂在當時的西海岸反文化潮流的衝擊下變得十分抽象，但The Mamas & the Papas卻將大眾流行化和嚴肅音樂的內涵在他們的作品中巧妙地結合起來。1967年，樂隊因在“Monday, Monday”中的出色演繹獲得了當年格萊美最佳創作、年度最佳流行樂隊兩個獎項，6月，樂隊參加了西海岸舉辦的蒙特利流行音樂節。
