42是老鼠為了探詢「生命、宇宙，以及任何事情的終極答案」而設計出的超級電腦（深思）計算出的“終極答案”（這也就是為什麼老鼠還要製造人類來研究生命的答案了）。它本身沒有很深刻的含義，只是一種小説的表達方法，突出荒誕的特點，因為本身就沒有什麼“關於宇宙、自然、生命的終極答案”，要不然超級電腦也不會答不出，反而去計算什麼是“終極問題”了。您若在Google輸入the answer to life, the universe, and everything，Google會直接回答42——而且還是用Google計算器算出來的。
