綠日主唱兼《21 Guns》的創作者比利·喬·阿姆斯特朗，想通過本歌曲傳遞一種愛國的情懷，闡明反戰的主題，安慰對曾經信任過布什政府如今失望透頂的美國羣眾。 ^[2]  2009年12月7日，《21 Guns》被比利·喬·阿姆斯特朗重新創作，並於2009年12月22日以數字單曲形式重新發行，演出過《美國偶像》音樂劇的學員也參與了演唱及創作。 ^[3]

《21 Guns》融入了多元化的音樂風格，如成人抒情、另類流行、搖滾和朋克復興。有着《Boulevard of Broken Dreams》裏的吉他，Mott the Hoople的《All the Young Dudes》裏的旋律。 ^[6] 

《21 Guns》的MV由Marc Webb執導。MV於2008年5月25日發行，講述了，在洛杉磯的一家汽車旅館，一對情侶在槍林彈雨中互相依靠，最終安然逃生的故事。MV中的情侶是《21st Century Breakdown》封面上兩位虛構的人物Christian和Gloria，前者由Josh Boswell飾演，後者由由Lisa Stelly飾演。MV中汽車旅館的牆上有綠日的歌曲《See The Light》的歌詞。 ^[7]
