霍特林人物簡介

哈羅德·霍特林（英語：Harold Hotelling，1895年9月29日－1973年12月26日）為數理統計學者、當代具重要影響力的經濟理論學者。
1927年起，他擔任史丹佛大學數學系副教授。1931年到1946年期間，任職哥倫比亞大學。1946年起，在北卡羅來納大學教堂山分校數理統計系任教，直到他去世。教堂山有一條街道和他的名字有關。1972年，因對科學的貢獻獲頒 North Carolina Award。
當他在華盛頓大學就讀時，受知名數學家Eric Temple Bell的鼓舞，從數學轉換到經濟學領域。後來，他四十多歲在哥倫比亞大學任教時，換他鼓舞他的學生肯尼斯·約瑟夫·阿羅，從數學和統計領域轉換到精算學科，朝數學在經濟理論中更廣泛應用之路邁進。
哈羅德·霍特林曾從業新聞，但他同時學習數學，1921年獲華盛頓大學科學碩士學位，1924年以拓撲方面的論文獲普林斯頓大學哲學博士學位。後任教於斯坦福大學。1931年任哥倫比亞大學經濟學教授。1946年起，任北卡羅利納大學教授，直至去世。1936-1937年，曾任計量經濟學會主席;1941 年，曾任數理統計學會主席。他還是倫敦皇家學會榮譽會員。1970年，他被選為美國全國科學院院士， 1973年又被選為羅馬林琴科學院院士。 [1]

霍特林主要貢獻

霍特林的主要貢獻在計量經濟學、多元分析和統計推斷等領域。他是多元分析領域的領袖人物，在向量值隨機變量的處理中，他引人了一些基本概念與工具。1931年，他推廣了一元正態理論的擴統計，後被稱為霍特林Tz統計。他在主分量和典型相關等概念的發展過程中，也起了十分重要的作用。第二次世界大戰期間，他在哥倫比亞大學組織了一個有名的統計研究組為軍事服務，並發展了序貫方法理論。 [2]
