Forest Of Shadows於1997秋成立於瑞典的哈姆斯塔德（Halmstad），最初由於沒有合適的人選，尼科拉斯準備把樂隊弄成一個人樂隊。1998年Jhan Svensson（約翰 斯文森）加入，但不久因理念不合離去。同年Niclas找到了一個志趣相合的朋友Micce dersson（麥斯 安德森）兩個人一起錄製了Eternal Autumn. 1999年初尼科拉斯和安德森倆人聯繫了大名鼎鼎的Katatonia 並翻唱了他們的Rainroom。

1999年11月尼科拉斯的同學Martin Classon加入演奏吉他。一個月後安德森的同學Tommy Rydberg（湯米雷德伯格）來打鼓了。這樣，們準備開始他們的第一次演出。這是樂隊的最初形態。Forest Of Shadows瑞典的一支以“憂鬱情緒&優美旋律”為特色的厄運金屬樂隊。他們的作品不多，但是首首都很經典，催人淚下，Forest Of Shadows初次以98年demo"Under The Dying Sun"亮相於世 ，之後的作品中加入了長笛，使那種傷感的情緒越發明顯。

"departure"是Forest Of Shadows 04年的新專輯，雖然專輯僅僅“Sleeping Death ”“November Dream ”“Bleak Dormition ”“Open Wound ”“Departure ”這五首曲目，但是每首歌曲都很長，專輯總長超過一小時，從專輯中可以明顯感到一種強烈的憂鬱沉悶氣息。“Sleeping Death”給人一種無限的悲傷絕望感覺，脆弱的嗓音，樸素的吉他聲，低沉的BASS讓我們沉寂於短暫的緩和而令人感到不安的氛圍之中，感覺似乎有中情緒即將被釋放出來，隨着一聲尖喉，彷彿把我們帶到了另一個世界，內心的不安與煩躁之情一泄而出，把歌曲推向了高潮。“November Dream ”優美的吉他點綴着質樸的聲音，令人感到一絲美感，伴隨着一聲驚喉，沉重的鼓點，吉他，BASS也更加的有力，這才令人感受金屬的力量，平靜與暴躁，歌曲似乎不斷的穿梭於兩個極端之間，時而讓人感到淒涼與美麗，時而又煩躁不安。"Bleak Dorminion"是專輯中最短的一首曲目，優美的鋼琴聲，BASS，吉他營造出一種憂鬱，平靜的情緒，引人進入無限的遐想之中。"Open Wound"是很一首很出色的作品，歌曲以一段優美，淒涼的旋律開篇，慢慢的把情緒步步往上推，然後又回到最初那種優美，淒涼的氛圍之中，漸漸的消逝於黑暗之中。"Departure"也是整張專輯的最後一首作品，相對專輯中其他曲目來説，這首作品顯得更加直接，開篇就令人感到金屬的氣息，悲哀的聲音，粗糙的吉他，處處瀰漫着厄運的氣息，令人感到無限的傷感.

Forest of shadows是極端殘酷的音樂，殘酷到把每一塊肉每一滴血都晾在可見的地方讓自己看清，看清，原來我們是什麼？和海岸上的一灘泥或者一片枯黃落葉沒什麼區別。甚至還不如它們的存在有價值，我活着，可是我什麼都改變不了，我唯一能做到的就是保持沉默，有時候這樣還要被別人以為是裝出一副很酷的樣子云雲。 FOS可以在暗夜中僅用雙手托起目空一切上升天際的勇氣，這就是它真正極端的地方。

當長笛在萬籟俱寂中響起，近乎失真的效果器和撕裂一般的死嗓反覆的轟鳴，才讓你看到原來自己所在的孤島，它離大陸是那麼那麼遠，海天之際看不到任何可見的哪怕是濃灰亮白的層迭顏色，唯有一色的黑，找不到任何出口，你唯一能做的是體會自己的恐懼，像呼吸一般無處不在，而又是那麼微妙，因為你從前沒有任何機會，或者是不會讓自己去正視那些。恐懼像海上初開的濃塵迷霧，緊緊擁抱着你曾經的悲涼曾經的荒蕪曾經的神殤。
