袁隆平星

“袁隆平星”是1996年9月18日在中國科學院國家天文台興隆觀測站由施密特CCD小行星項目組發現的。由於發現後的暫定編號為1996 SD1，其中SD正好是中文“水稻”的漢語拼音字頭，因此當它獲得8117這一永久編號後，“為紀念中國工程院院士、國家雜交水稻工程技術研究中心主任袁隆平（1930年-2021年）”，被命名為袁隆平星。

袁隆平，中國雜交水稻研究的奠基人，他為中國乃至世界雜交水稻的高產做出了巨大貢獻，多次獲得國際獎項，被國外同行譽為’雜交水稻之父‘ ”。國際天文學聯合會決定把它命名為袁隆平星。國際天文學聯合會（IAU）官網上對此的解釋原文是：

“Named in honor of Longping Yuan (b. 1930), member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, head of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering and Technical Research Center of China. As the founder of the Chinese hybrid rice research effort, he contributes greatly to great production in China and worldwide. He has won many international prizes and is honored as the "Father of Hybrid Rice" by foreign colleagues. [Ref: Minor Planet Circ. 35490]” ^[1]
